Bocce Volo

Villages column written by Betty Hall
The return of the Saturday Bocco Volo tournament finished July 5th. There were 8 team of 8 players and all the games were played on Saturdays. This tournament was first played in 2019 and after a covid interruption, it was time to start it up again. Being on Saturdays,  it was hoped that it would give our bocce players who still were working a chance to play in a tournament the wasn’t just Monday thru Thursday. I guess 64 players proved that to be true.
On the final day there were playoff games followed by an amazing potluck. The bocce social coordinator, Barb Orlando, assisted by the membership chair,  Jeanne-Anne Whitacre, coordinated the potluck to make sure it wasn’t just chips and salsa.
The winning team, The Fixers,  are pictured below. Left to right: Tony Orlando, Captain Todd Horvatich, Karen Peters, Gale Murai, Debra Spencer and Colleen McIntyre.

Congratulations to all the winners.  The next big tournament starts Monday, July 14th and pits the Guys versus the Gals. 30 teams will play on Monday, Wednesday, or Thursday at 9:30 am or 6:00 pm. After 6 weeks of games, there will be a championship celebration on August 27th.

Spring Mixer Tournament Celebration

After six weeks, 256 bocce players including experienced players as well as brand new players making up 32 teams, it all came down to 8 teams.  These 8 teams who made it to the playoff week had cumulative scores of 7-5, 8-4, 9-3 and 10-2 after 12 games in 6 weeks.
So on Monday, April 21, these teams met for a one game playoff to determine who would go to the semifinals and hopefully the final.  On Monday morning, the Wild Cats beat the Bocceholics while the Blastards beat the Crunchy Rollers. In the afternoon, The Diamonds in the Rough defeated the Bocce Buddies while The Big LeBocce came out ahead of The Sure Shots.
So now it’s down to these four winning teams for the Tuesday, April 22 semi-finals. They all want to be in the final game on Wednesday but it’s going to be the 5th seed Blastards versus the 7th seed The Big LeBocce.
Again, a one game hour long playoff match, referreed by Kerry Besmehn took place Wednesday at 10:30am.  With an large audience of interested bocce players surrounding Court 1, these 2 teams brought their best throws.
At the end of the hour, it was The Blastards who won the match with an impressive score.
Captain Jeanne Anne Whitacre, Jackie Berman, Kime Kim-Tiger, Steve Gilbert , Del Herfurth, Maureen Keane, Doreen Senior, Gerri McCoid
Finishing second was The Big Lebocce.
Captain Jay Deimling, Bob Lapidus,  Sandi Rosenblum, Betty Abelson, Marilyn  Goldsmith, Marilyn Gingerelli and 2 new bocce players, Samara King and Fifi Belalis and referee Kerry Besmehn.
